Meet Sonya! Sonya is originally from Albuquerque, NM and has been living here in Kelowna for five years. Her passion for mountain biking has taken her all over the world and she strives to help people be better and live more positive, empowered lives.
On March 12, pro cyclist Sonya Looney, 36, posted an Instagram video of herself rocking rollers and sweeping berms through a mini pump track in Knox Mountain Park in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Sonya is a 24-hour world champion, a three-time 24-hour national champion, a two-time Yak Attack winner and winner of the Trans Andes race in Chile among many other accomplishments. She also coached basketball legend Reggie Miller (right) into becoming a serious mountain bike racer.
Families in India have been overprotective about their daughters, so much so, that seldom do they realise, they are choking them. Even husbands and brothers need to open their minds. Women have been ignored in a number of fields, be it business, education or sports. Hence, its been a difficult task to find inspiring women cyclists in our own country who are known for their skills on a bike.
I mountain bike because it makes me feel most alive and takes me on the wildest outdoor adventures all over the world. Cycling teaches me so much about myself and about life. It makes me more confident in my life and creates unforgettable memories!
It started like a normal day in the Mediterranean at Spain’s premiere stage race. But the days to follow would be plagued with extreme rain, mud and challenges.
Longtime endurance mountain biker Sonya Looney has done stage races in over 20 different countries, often in some of the hardest conditions imaginable. And for the last several years, she’s been crushing these long, ultra-endurance events on a plant-based diet.
