What Do
Process over outcome.
Success is crossing the finish line with an effort you are proud of, regardless of the actual race time or podium position. Success is defined with a growth mindset: the focus on effort, viewing challenges as opportunities to learn, and avoiding assigning a result as personal validation. It took me years to get to this point.
Why do I race? While I love to battle for that top spot on the podium, the race result is minor compared to the experience. Riding a bike has taught me the kind of person I want to be and has taken me to places I never dreamed of. A race result is earned from hours of dedication, commitment, hard work, life experiences, and personal relationships along the way. Personally, that’s where I find value in racing. It can be difficult for racers to detach their ego from their race results and it can be a serious detriment. If a racer is too results-focused, it can ruin the experience of racing and also affect how that racer may treat his/her fellow competitors. We all race because we love a challenge and work towards a goal, and the result is just the icing on the cake!
The battle for searching for feeling like we are enough and tying that to achievement is part of the human condition. I try to bring awareness to the fact that no matter how much I achieve, it will never feel like enough. Racing for the right reasons is key!
When the going gets tough, it’s your mind that gets you to the finish line.
