Experiencing the outdoors in Canada is a must. The gorgeous landscape is prime for all kinds of outdoor activities. But the terrain can be tricky, so It’s important to make sure you’re informed, aware and safe when enjoying nature.
That’s where AdventureSmart comes in.
AdventureSmart is a national program dedicated to encouraging Canadians and its visitors to “get informed and go outdoors,” and offers educational programs, community outreach and special events to help reduce the number (and severity) of search and rescue incidents in the country.
During this week’s podcast, Sonya sat down with AdventureSmart’s Executive Director Sandra Riches to talk about AdventureSmart’s work and the work of the BC Search and Rescue Association. They discussed how to plan a trip, the essentials for travel, and how to know when to reach out to search and rescue.
“A lot of us have super easy access to awesome terrain [in British Columbia]. It’s out the door. It’s just out the door for me today, I’m sure it’s just out the door for you there. It’s easy to get to. That gives us a false sense of security. That false sense of security or just plain security, confidence, gives us the opportunity to go out for that ride on our own because we know we think we’re close to our family, residents areas, help if you will, so it’s easy to do that. Our ideal message is that you have at least one other person. I always say three. Three is big in what we talk about for many reasons, but three is nice. Let’s say you and I and another person are out riding. I get hurt, you can help me and the third person can take care of communications, go get help if necessary if we’re in a situation where that can be had, and so then we’re all taken care of. It’s really helpful versus alone.”
