What is Your Keystone Habit?

Since I’ve been talking about goal-setting, overcoming excuses and staying motivated, AND since this week’s podcast has an arsenal of tools on How to Change, I figured the idea of the habit lynch pin would be a good topic for this week.

We all of have one or maybe two habits we do regularly that help all of our other healthy habits fall into place.  It’s like the domino (and force behind it) that knocks down the entire stack.  For my husband, it’s consistent exercise. He notices that if he stays consistent with his training and exercise, he tends to go to bed earlier, eat healthier foods, and generally make better healthy choices.  For myself, my habit lynch pin is a bedtime before 10PM.  That will set me up to get more sleep (well, until our newborn shows up in March!).  Good sleep ensures I have the energy to train well, work well, take care of my family, take care of myself, and feel happier.  Here’s an article I wrote about taking care of your foundation as its the key to peak performance.  Meal prep on the weekend is another keystone habit.

How do you know what your keystone habit is?  It starts with thinking about at time where you noticed that everything seemed to flow well in your life. A time you felt good in your body and mind, a time where there seemed to be less resistance.  Then try to notice what you were doing consistently.  You can make a list of those things and then pay attention to how you feel when you do each one of them consistently.

Here are some ideas although this list is far from conclusive!

  • Getting up early
  • Journaling
  • Meditating
  • Not drinking during the week
  • Regularly reading a book
  • Drinking enough water
  • Planning your day with a calendar
  • Maintaining a routine of some kind

Consistency is one of the most important factors of moving the needle.  You are better off riding a bike for less hours more days per week than doing one or two big rides on the weekend. You are better off going to bed and waking up at the same time every day rather than having an erratic sleep schedule to make up for sleep on the weekend.  

What are you doing consistently that helps all of your other habits fall into place?  If you can identify that, then you can use some tools in the podcast to make things easier.
